چکیده

Statins have been widely studied as antibacterial compounds, but the mechanism of their bacterial inhibition is still not known. In the present investigation two statins, atorvastatin and rosuvastatin, were tested for their antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and both showed MIC of 625μg/ml. Both the statins shared structural similarity with quorum sensing signal molecule of Gram negative bacteria i.e. N-acylhomoserine lactone (AHL) but showed no functional agonist or antagonist activity, as indicated by QS-deficient Agrobacterium tumefaciens A136 biosensor strain. Atorvastatin increased the flagella-mediated swarming, swimming and type IV pilimediated twitching motilities and biofilm formation in P. aeruginosa PAO1 while rosuvastatin decreased all three motilities slightly but had no effect on biofilm formation.

Low concentrations of local honey modulate ETA expression, and quorum sensing related virulence in drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa recovered from infected burn wounds

Objective(s): Honey’s ability to kill microorganisms and even eradication of chronic infections with drug-resistant pathogens has been documented by numerous studies. The present study is focused on the action of honey in its sub-inhibitory levels to impact on the pathogens coordinated behaviors rather than killing them. Materials and Methods:</strong...

Repurposing metformin as a quorum sensing inhibitor in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

BACKGROUND Quorum sensing is a mechanism of intercellular communication that controls the production of virulence factors in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Inhibition of quorum sensing can disarm the virulence factors without exerting stress on bacterial growth that leads to emergence of antibiotic resistance. OBJECTIVES Finding a new quorum sensing inhibitor and determining its inhibitory activitie...

Anti-quorum Sensing Activity of Some Medicinal Plants

BACKGROUND Quorum sensing is the key regulator of virulence factors of Pseudomonas aeruginosa such as biofilm formation, motility, productions of proteases, hemolysin, pyocyanin, and toxins. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of the extracts from some medicinal plants on quorum sensing and related virulence factors of P. aeruginosa. MATERIAL AND METHODS Quorum sensing inhibitory ...

Meloxicam inhibits biofilm formation and enhances antimicrobial agents efficacy by Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Microbial biofilms are communities of surface-adhered cells enclosed in a matrix of extracellular polymeric substances. Bacterial cells in biofilm are 10~1,000-fold more resistant to antimicrobials than the planktonic cells. Burgeoning antibiotic resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm has necessitated the development of antimicrobial agents. Here, we have investigated the antibiofilm effe...

Analysis of Quorum Sensing Inhibition and Phytochemicals in Different Extracts of Garlic

Usage of Allium sativum L. bulb (Amaryllidaceae) against the pathogenesis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an emphasized approach. However, biological response and safety of herbal extracts depend upon the processing methods and solvents used in preparation. In this study, various garlic bulb extracts (ethanol, ethyl acetate, methanol, acetone, chloroform, toluene, raw and heated) were prepared and...
